BEDE WIND PHILHARMONIC - CONSTITUTION

1. AIM

The aim of the band is to provide the opportunity for members of the community to play wind band music to the highest possible level, involving, where appropriate, participation in music festivals, tours, workshop and concerts with professional artistes.

2. ATTENDANCE

Musical attainment is only possible through regular practice. Band rehearsals will be held weekly at Springfield School and members will be expected to make every effort to attend all rehearsals. Additional rehearsals may be necessary for concerts, tours and festivals. Poor attendance will lead to a letter from the Band Secretary requesting regular attendance thereafter. Persistent non-attendance will result in the committee removing a person from membership. This condition will not apply to student members who live out of the area.

3. MUSIC

Music will be purchased from band funds and placed in folders. Members are encouraged to borrow these folders for personal practice and they are then responsible for the safekeeping of that music. In cases where members are unable to attend a practice they must ensure that the folder is returned in time. Failure to do so will result in other members being unable to take a full part in rehearsals.

4. COMMITTEE

The committee shall consist of the following persons:
Conductor (ex - officio), Secretary, Treasurer, Representative of Supporters of the band and seven other band members (two being under 21 years of age). The committee must include one representative of Springfield School. The committee may co-opt other persons to further the work of the band.

Committee members are expected to be active members and failure to attend three consecutive committee meetings will automatically lead to that member losing their position. Committee elections will take place every year. The Conductor will not stand for election and shall be appointed by the committee. Any suggestions or complaints should be given, in writing, to a committee member and the committee is obliged to deal with the matter.

5. SUBSCRIPTIONS

Subscriptions will be payable at every practice by all members at a rate to be fixed each year by the committee. Persistent failure to pay subscriptions will lead to a person being removed from membership.

6. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

A bank account will be operated using two out of the three stipulated signatories. All monies raised by the band and its supporters through subscriptions, concerts and other activities shall be used to further the work of the band and this may include subsidies for tours.

7. SUPPORTERS

When appropriate, supporters of the band may organise such events as they deem necessary to raise money and augment the activities of the band.

8. LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS

The Subscribers Secretary will compile a list of subscribers who, for an annual fee of [GBP]6.50, will receive two half-price tickets for all of the band's concerts in South Tyneside. Members of the band and their families will be entitled to become subscribers.

9. EXAMINATION ENTRIES

The band shall encourage members to pursue their musical studies by offering to pay half of the following examination fees:
i) practical music examination fees for grades 5, 6, 7, 8 of the five leading music Colleges.
ii) theory music examination fees for grade 8 of the Royal Schools of Music.

The fees only apply to members who have left school or sixth form college and do not apply in respect of diploma examinations.

10. DRESS

All members shall be expected to purchase and wear the band uniform for concerts. In cases of hardship this may be subsidised.

11. DISSOLUTION

If the Committee decides that it is necessary or advisable to dissolve the band then it shall call an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members and put the proposal to them. If the proposal is confirmed by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting the Committee shall have the power to realise any assets held on behalf of the band. If on the winding-up or dissolution of the band there remains after satisfaction of all its debts and liabilities any property whatever, the same shall not be paid or distributed among the members but shall be given or transferred to some other organisation having objects similar to the objects of the band, such organisation to be determined by the members of the band on or before the time of dissolution and in so far as effect cannot be given to such provision then to some charitable object.
